CBS has ordered one new installment of The Amazing Race for next season versus the two installments it ordered for this season.
The network caution follows the 9-11 p.m. debut of Race on Feb. 28, when it averaged a 4.1 rating in adults 18-49 versus a 4.9 rating a year earlier.
But the three-time Emmy winner for best reality competition series faced tougher competition in the slot this year and, as a competitor noted, still delivered solid demos for CBS as it prepared to settle into its new 10 p.m. time period Tuesday.CBS Monday initially announced it had picked up the 10th and 11th installments of the series for next season, but later said the addition of the 11th season was a typo and that only the 10th installment for fall had received a renewal order, along with a spate of other returning shows.
Of the pickups, three were series that debuted this season: Criminal Minds, Ghost Whisperer and How I Met Your Mother.
However, not making the initial short list were veteran comedies King of Queens, Still Standing and Yes, Dear. 2005-06 freshmen Close To Home and Out of Practice also were not on the list.
In addition to the three rookies and Race, CBS also will bring back 60 Minutes, Cold Case, NCIS, Numb3rs, Survivor, Two and a Half Men, Without a Trace and all three C.S.I. shows.

We said that you should expect it, and now at long last it’s here! Paramount Home Entertainment will debut NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigation Service - Season 1 on May 30th. This is a 6-DVD set of the CBS show which stars Mark Harmon (Chicago Hope, Chasing Liberty), Sasha Alexander (Mission: Impossible III), Michael Weatherly (Dark Angel, Loving), and David McCallum (The Man From U.N.C.L.E.). A spin-off of JAG (which gets its own DVD release in June), NCIS from Creator, Executive Producer and Director Donald P. Bellisario (Magnum P.I., Quantum Leap, etc.).
We should mention, before moving on, that the information we received actually had two different street dates in it for this product. The other one was “June 6th”. We’ve asked the studio for clarification on this, to see if it got pushed back a week. We’ll let you know what they say, but right now we’re going with the May 30th date because retailers, including Wal-Mart, have that date down on their schedules.
Look for 16 hours, 49 minutes of running time covering 23 episodes, plus exclusive bonus featurettes (details on those extras are still forthcoming). Video is 16×9 widescreen, audio is Dolby Digital English Stereo and Spanish Stereo, and this release is closed captioned for the hearing impaired. Wal-Mart shows a $49.98 list price. Our thanks to reader Kylie Webb for helping us with this story. Here’s an early look at the box art, which is early and still subject to change:

CBS’ Tuesday crime procedural series “NCIS” hit an all-time high of 18.17 million viewers, along with a series record in the coveted 18-49 demographic.Unfortunately, the cast really hasn’t noticed the difference.
“No, because we don’t get to do anything,” says Sean Murray, who plays probationary Special Agent Timothy “Probie” McGee. “We’re either here or asleep.” » More

There’s a new mystery woman on “NCIS” and ET special correspondent CARLOS PONCE is on the set when she goes undercover — and under the covers — with Special Agent Tony DiNozzo (MICHAEL WEATHERLY) for tonight’s episode, airing on CBS at 8 p.m.
“You have to watch,” COTE DE PABLO tells Carlos, who is feeling very protective toward the actress, with whom he co-hosted the Spanish-language TV show “Control” years ago. “[You don't want to watch] because you met me when I was 15, and in your mind I still am.”
Cote was initially introduced on “NCIS” as Mossad agent Ziva David, who was sent to Washington, D.C. to convince Gibbs (MARK HARMON) that the sniper that killed Kate (SASHA ALEXANDER) was not Ari (guest star RUDOLF MARTIN). Of course, it was, but as Ari’s half-sister, Ziva had to be convinced. Gibbs managed to do that and Ziva ended up killing her brother — just before he put a bullet into Gibbs. Now she’s joining the staff of NCIS as a new special agent.
“It is an incredible show,” Cote tells Carlos. “I am playing a wonderful character. I couldn’t be more thrilled. It is a huge challenge for me as an actress. I am so happy to be working with these incredible actors, who are just incredible people also.”
Of course, they are also practical jokers and Cote has already fallen for a prank pulled by Mark.
“The first week I actually worked with Mark Harmon, we are standing in the elevator shooting a scene,” she recalls. “Halfway through the scene, they yell, ‘Cut.’ He turns to me and says, ‘You have to watch out for the elevator … just hold on.’”
By the end of the scene, she was hanging on for dear life, and she had been “punk’d!”
For more on Carlos’ visit to the set of “NCIS,” tune in to tonight’s ET — and catch Carlos and Michael when they go topless for the ET cameras!

Somebody’s number is up at the end of the “NCIS” season finale tonight, but who could it be? Our own KEVIN FRAZIER hit the set of the hit CBS drama to find out just who draws the short straw on tonight’s episode.
“I think anything’s in play here, I really do,” MARK HARMON tells Kevin. “I kind of thought [I was safe] at ‘St. Elsewhere’ and they wrote me out the door in two seconds, so the truth is this is a job you do daily here, and I think it’s healthy for a show to let actors know that they’re replaceable.” » More
